Being an architect means that you have the chance of becoming rich while also doing what you love best- making designs. All of the buildings that made you say, “wow”, were all created by amazing architects.
That being said, a lot of people actually aspire to be one but I have to warn you that it is not going to be an easy road ahead. This road is fraught with hardships and sleepless nights, but once you get out of that, everything will be smooth-sailing.
Today, I am going to impart some success tips for aspiring architects so that you will become successful and hopefully, one day, you will be able to establish your very own architecture company in the future.
Make Yourself Indispensable
One of the things that you should think about is how you can elevate yourself above the rest. If your goal is to become one of the best or perhaps, you want to have a raise, then you have to make your own mark in the industry.
For instance, one of my colleagues has a huge interest in sustainable and eco-friendly designs. Because of that interest, she has put in a lot of time and effort into becoming a master in that particular field. That is what makes her an indispensable part of our company.
What interests you the most? Focus on that and master the craft.
You have to understand that your fellow architects can actually be sources of knowledge and inspiration. That is why if you are still new in the industry, go out there and seek mentorship.
Perhaps, asking them out for a cup of coffee while also sinking in some of their knowledge will really help you in this field.
Establish Your Network
Architecture is one of those industries where the ones that become successful have established their own brand and have fostered relationships to help build strong networks.
A strong network ensures that your job is easier and if you are in need of any new projects, having good links to some influential people can really help you in this regard.
You Ask, You Get
One of the most embarrassing stories of my career was that I had to ask for a raise to get one. Given that I have a license and some experience, I still had to do that just to get something that I want.
However, in retrospect, that was actually one of the best things that I did because it helped paved the way for me to become a great architect.
In life, you just have to ask before you can get what you really want. So I urge you, young architect, to do the same.
Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
There is this longstanding notion that architects, at least some of them, are shy people. Well, the good thing about being bashful is that you can always do something about it and given that our careers are part of the service industry, you have to know how to talk to your clients.
That being said, if talking to other people is a mammoth task for you, then going out of your comfort zone can really help.
I was painfully shy back then and the only way for me to become a little bit thick-skinned is to take improv comedy classes.
Don’t Be Afraid of Failure
Failure is a concept that people do not like, but it is actually necessary (at times) for us to succeed. Creating design concepts can be quite hard, especially if you have to incorporate a lot of things. But, trust me when I say that everything will be alright if just have the patience and perseverance to push through.
